You used to be cool. What happened? Did the 9 to 5 kill your soul? Have your kids stolen your time, energy AND identity? Well, take off your Ray-Bans, hang up your leather coat and stop saving up for that mid-life crisis Corvette. True cool exudes from your every pore by simply exercising some core concepts of improv.
Take More Risks
Great improvisers can justify almost anything in an improv scene. This skill allows players to step outside of their comfort zone and make bold moves in front of rows of strangers hungry for a laugh. The pay-off of experiencing your risks succeed helps rewire your brain to boldly go where no one... crap. Just walked into a Star Trek reference. There went my cool points. Moving on...
Actively Listen, Jack
Put the phone down and make eye contact with whomever is talking to you. Let their words bring you on a ride full of images and organic questions instead of planning on what you’re going to say next. Active listening will help you react in a focused and honest way, which is Leo DiCaprio cool. (This article was written when Leo DiCaprio was still considered cool.)
Editor's Note: HE IS!!!!
Say "Yes, And" More Often
Power off Netflix, put on some pants and say yes, and to some of the parties, meet-ups and artistic endeavors you've been avoiding. Trying new things keeps your brain active, improves your social skills and might just uncover some hidden talents. It’s hard to exercise your awesome on your La-Z-Boy anyway. Seriously. Go outside. You’re overdue. Everyone thinks so. They’re just being polite.
You Down With POV?
Actors create and take on the POV (Point Of View) of their characters to guide them in making unique and interesting choices on stage. With that brief definition now in your noggin, think about how some of the coolest people you know see the world. Is everything they come in contact with here for their amusement? Is the world is their circus? Do they constantly look for ways to improve things with every step they take? Stuff that in your brain hole and then throw it away. Cool people don’t have to prove it. Just be cool. How’s that for a POV?
Lead the Pack
Please the crowd by communicating effectively, taking and giving focus when needed, and sympathizing with your peers. Or don’t. Whatever. You don’t need our approval.
Congratulations! Now you’re cool. You can also exercise the above concepts and more by taking a class. See our full classes, immersions, online offerings and more here.
