Second City & 'SCTV' Chief Andrew Alexander Announced As 2018 Governor General's Performing Arts Award Laureate

Second City CEO & Executive Producer and SCTV co-creator Andrew Alexander has been announced as one of the 2018 Governor General's Performing Arts Awards laureates.

Alexander joins the ranks of fellow Second City and SCTV alums Martin Short and Eugene Levy as a recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award, Canada's highest honour for performing artists "whose accomplishments have inspired and enriched the cultural life" of the country.

"I was a little dumbfounded when I got the call, thinking 'Are you sure you got the right Andrew Alexander?'" Alexander said via video during the Awards announcement Thursday morning. "It's a phenomenal acknowledgment for a kid from Brampton...It's pretty cool."

Rounding out the list of fellow honorees this year are:

• Singer-songwriter Murray McLauchlan
• Actor Geneviève Bujold
• Concert pianist Angela Hewitt
• National Arts Centre president Peter Herrndorf
• Dancer and choreographer Ginette Laurin

Arts champion Florence Junca Adenot is receiving the Voluntarism Award, while indie pop duo Tegan and Sara are being bestowed the 2018 National Arts Centre Award.
